ELA Games in Group Rotations
Reading games are a great way to reinforce skills. Students are having fun and don’t even realize they are learning and practicing their skills! You can even take data over the words they are reading in the game. Reading games are a frequent request for my students. Most games are easily played in the last few minutes of class or as a reward or a Fun Friday.
ELA Games
Board Games
There are lots of free, blank game boards if you search them online. Then, write words from the students’ word lists in the blank spaces. I like to add: skip a turn, Move 2 forward, Move 2 back, roll again, etc.
Reading Last Card
You can create your own Last Card cards, it’s time consuming, but once created, you can use it over and over again. I typically will create games on the key sounds or skills. It’s easy using a free website, sightwords.com There are lots of other games on there as well which you can play, print, and/or customize.
Roll and Read
Using a grid, you will write one word in each box. Students will roll a dice and read the word in the next box. I have several in my TPT store, on my website, or you can create your own. I have one in my Free Resource Library, so check that out!
Reading Matching
Create a set of cards with a word on one and a matching picture on the other. Students will match the word with the picture. Students can match a sound, like short o, or match the word, cat, with the picture.
Go Fish
Create a set of cards with matching skills or words. Students will ask for the word or skill to another player. Easy and fun, plus they can be individualized to each of your groups! I do have several sets in my TPT store.
Most of these you can create yourself. It is time consuming, but I’ve used these games over and over again in my small groups. This could be a great project for over the summer! However, I have several of these available for purchase in my TPT store. I have several of these on my Free Resource Library. Fill out the boxes below or click here.
