Teacher Group Box Organization

With any small intervention group, you need to organize your teacher supplies.  Having supplies organized and within grasp will enable an easily run group.

Reading Group Organization: Teacher Box

I love teaching Reading.  It’s an amazing program!  I wouldn’t recommend it to all my students.  However, I teach it or at least some of the reading strategies I’ve learned in every reading group.

Not all reading programs are not intended to be a program to purchase and teach, but in fact involves a lot of training.  I was trained in several reading programs over the years. Is it worth it?  YES!  But it’s a commitment that you will need to be ready for.  My favorite reading program is the Wilson Reading Program.  It is worth it to be trained.

There are so many components that go into teaching a reading group.  Organization is key not only for ease of teaching, but also to keep the group running smoothly to eliminate down time!  It’s fantastic that I really LOVE organization!

Reading Teacher Group Box

I have found it easiest to give each group I teach their own box with all the needed supplies.  I realize some teachers will reuse some of the supplies for multiple groups, but for me, I’ve found this is a more efficient use of time and organization.

It is easy to grab the reading group box and begin teaching right away.  I have everything I need within reach.  Also, at the end of the lesson, it helps with easy clean up!  I will go over the organization of each component, but here is a run down of what I put in my Teacher Group Boxes.

  • Clip board with lesson plan
  • Syllable Cards
  • High Frequency Word Cards
  • Word Cards: Rainbow Stack
  • Word Element Cards

Lesson Cards

Depending on where the students are in the Wilson Reading Program, students may have different cards.  This is where organization may differ from instructor to instructor.

For ease of teaching and time constraints, as I mentioned before, I like to have sets for each group.

Word Cards

Rainbow Stack: Each group has their own set of Word Cards or Rainbow Stack, how I refer to it.  I organize the cards in this box (LINK) for ease.  When the word cards are being currently worked on, I’ll paperclip them and put them in front.  Then, when the word cards are a review, they will  go up front, in back of the paperclip.  It’s easy to know which cards are current versus review.  I will always grab the review stack, or a portion of the stack if large, to review with the students. Any review words that are incorrect, I will put in front of the review stack to go over in the next lesson.   Repetition is key!!!!

For each of the following sets of cards I keep them in two stacks with binder clips.  One binder clip will have the group number and the other will have a teacher set.

Syllable Cards

I will keep the current subset’s syllable cards in the teacher box.  The group binder clip contains the words used for the current lesson and the teacher set will have the other words. As I’m filling out the lesson plan, I’ll pull out the words that I plan to use while teaching.  This will make it more efficient during teaching.

High Frequency Words

The student set is what the students are currently working on  or have already learned.  The teacher set contains the words that will come up next.  Some instructors will have students review cards for that current subset, but I like to keep all the High Frequency word cards that they are working on and have already learned together so we can go over them each lesson.  Repetition is key!

Word Elements Cards

The student set is the word elements the students are currently working on or have already learned.  The teacher set contains the word elements  that will come up next.  Again, instructors will have students review cards for that current subset, but I like to keep all the word element cards that they are working on and have already learned together so we can go over them each lesson.  Repetition is key!

Student Reader

The last part that I keep in the teacher box is the Student Reader the group is on.  I like to have my own copy to look at while the students are reading from their copy.
