Group Lesson Supplies Organization

The Wilson Reading Program comes with lots of supplies.  For me, I keep each small group’s supplies separate.  Check out how I organize my teacher small group supplies.

Before I go into the contents of the Teacher Group Box, I want to go over the first step of the Wilson Lesson and the organization.

The first parts of your Wilson Reading Lesson will involve going over sounds and creating words.  I use a pocket chart (LINK) and just change the needed letter-sound cards for each reading group.  My pocket chart is black and sometimes instead of removing the letters that aren’t used for that group, I will put a black piece of construction paper in front to make it easier.  Most of my groups are back to back and I want to make sure I am as efficient as possible for the students.

Syllable Cards

When teaching multisyllabic words, I will keep laminated notecards and write words directly using a dry erase marker.  They are easy to clean off at the end of the group or end of the day.

Therefore, there are a few other options.  Sometimes, I will pre-write the word syllables on the cards using the dry erase marker.  However, there is still the cleaning component.  This can get tedious when you have many groups.

Wilson has sets of their own syllable cards for purchase to use to make this part of the lesson easier.  The syllable cards are easy to use.  I typically keep them in the Teacher Group Boxes.

However, that can be time consuming not only cleaning but writing the words.  I have found that often students are waiting for you to write the word syllables and become off track.  This is easy, but personally I don’t think this is always the best use of my limited time.

Another option is to create your own syllable cards.  The Wilson Reading Syllable cards are available for purchase, but some of your groups may need more word options.  I like to make sure to use the errors on words in the next lesson.

Cards are easily created either in a document, writing them on a card, or I believe Wilson has a card PDF to use within Wilson Academy or Wilson Reading Training.  If I create my own, I make sure to write the subset on the card and laminate for future use.

Teacher Wilson Binder

I have found it useful to fill out a student binder along with the students.  If students have questions or need ideas for pictures, I can easily take it out for them to see or use as a model.  I have found it very helpful!

Letter Tiles

When letter tiles are not in use, I keep them in a plastic box.  I organize them in order of when I will use them.  The entire 1-12 steps aren’t in this box, but all of 1-6 and a little more can fit.  I mostly teach steps 1-6.

I wanted to create a blog series about how I organize each of my Reading Groups in hopes it helps out other teachers.  How do you organize your groups?  I would love to hear it in the comments!
