Word Work Rotations

Work Work is a way to create individualized practice for each student.  Students will be able to practice their sounds or sight words using individualized lists through each of the rotations.  By having a variety of activities, the students will never get bored!  

For my word work rotation activities, I put everything the students need inside the envelope or zipper pouch: directions, game pieces, worksheet copies, colored pencils, crayons, etc.  

Students are expected to bring their own pencil, which for my classroom, is in each student’s box.  When at this station, students will grab the envelope they need and find a spot to work or their desk.   

Before students play the games as individual rotations, I will introduce it as in small groups, and play or complete the activity a few times before trying it independently.  I want to make sure my students understand my expectations.

Here are some of my favorites that I have used and a brief description of each:

Rainbow Writing

Each student will use their own word list, dice, Rainbow writing chart, and 6 colored pencils.  The student will roll the dice, and choose the corresponding color according to the Rainbow Writing chart.  Next, they will write a word from their word list, with that color.  I like the students to write with colored pencils instead of crayons or markers because it is closer to pencils.

Money Words

Using their own word list and a money chart, students will add up how much each of their words are worth. Great math practice!  You can choose to use whole numbers or decimals.

Vowel & Consonants

 Students will choose two colors, one color for consonants and another color for vowels.  Students will use their word lists and write the words using the colors they choose. This is a great way to work on spelling.  

Words by Design

Students will create designs/shapes using the words from their word lists as the outline of the shape or design. Have students use colored pencils to make it more colorful and fun!

Stair Step Spelling

Using the words from their word list, students will write one letter, then add one letter on each line until the word is completed, like stair steps.

Roll and Read

The students will get a worksheet that has words already in each column.   Students will roll the dice, read the word in the box, and color it.  I tell the students if they are down to only a few words, to go ahead and read and color in the box. You can also have the students use 6 cubes, one in each column and see which cube is the winner.  You can also use action figures, cars, etc. to make it more fun and exciting!

Students will write 6 words from their word list  in each of the 6 columns.  Then, the students will  roll the dice, read the word, and color in the box. As I said above, you can also have the students use 6 cubes, one in each column and see which cube is the winner.  You can also use action figures, cars, etc. to make it more fun and exciting!

Look & Spell

Students will write 6 words from their word list in the “Look & Say” column.  In the “Write and Say” column, as the students write the word, they will spell or say each letter as they write it.  In the “Cover, Write & Say” column, the students will fold their paper to cover the “Look & Say” and “Write & Say” columns.  Students will try to write and spell the word aloud from memory.

Create a Word Search

Students will create a word search using words from each of their word lists. Students can solve it or exchange with another student to solve it.

Word Search 

Students will find the words from their word lists from the already created word search.

Bubble Letters

Students will write words from their word list where each letter is in a style that looks like puffy bubbles.

Code Creation
